Apply

If you've seen an opportunity that's right for you and want to work with us to shape the future of banking, we recommend that you complete an online application as soon as possible. We also ask that you only apply for one programme, in one region. Before you make your decision, explore this website and research our programmes.

Next steps
If you meet the criteria we look for in both our online application and our online numerical reasoning aptitude test, we will offer you a first-round interview. During the interview, we'll assess your key motivation, drive, commercial awareness and behaviours necessary for a successful career at HSBC and within your chosen business area. Depending on the location you apply to, this could take place over the telephone, face-to-face on campus or at one of our offices.

Final-stage interviews

Perform well during the initial interview and we'll invite you to a final-stage business assessment centre. In the Americas this will be a series of interviews. Key members of the business area will present you with a variety of exercises including motivational as well as business interviews and a business-related case study, which may take the form of a written exercise, a presentation and/or group exercise. Everything we ask you to do is designed to encourage you to demonstrate your full potential. Your motivation and commercial acumen is important to us. But so is your suitability to HSBC as an organisation and your demonstration of our key behaviours and values.

Impress us at this final stage and we'll quickly extend a formal offer to you for your chosen programme.

Apply as an MBA Associate or Summer Associate

Please complete our initial short registration on this site. All applications must be received through this site.

Interviews

If your initial application meets all our criteria, we'll invite you to first-round interviews. These will take place on campus. Senior members of our business who are part of our dedicated school teams will conduct the interviews. Final-round interviews will follow at the offices you have applied to, or on campus, depending on school policy.

We want you to make an informed decision about the programme you apply to. Whether you want to join us as a Summer Analyst, Analyst, MBA Summer Associate or MBA Associate, we have some guidelines that will help you complete your application and demonstrate your potential at every step of the selection process:

Research:

  • Ensure you have carefully researched HSBC, the industry and the business area you are applying for before you submit your application. Are your skills and aspirations a good match?
  • We offer a large amount of detailed information on this website. You can also consider broadening your outlook by looking at the latest trends in the industry. Developing your own views and opinions is an important step.
  • Consider visiting us when we're on campus. You can speak to our representatives and learn first-hand about the opportunities we offer.

The application form:

  • Personal details – ensure you submit the correct telephone number and email address so we are able to contact you promptly. Please also advise us of any changes to these details throughout the application process
  • Education – list your most recent educational information first and continue in chronological order. If you are planning to continue your studies and are yet to start this degree course, ensure this is also listed on your application or CV/resume
  • Work history – list your most recent work experience first and continue in chronological order. Ensure that you have completed this section with as much relevant information as possible, including your employer's name, address, location. Summarise your experience referring to the skills you have gained and projects you have undertaken that you feel make you suitable for the programme you have applied to
  • Interests and achievements: We actively seek to recruit people from a diverse range of backgrounds and interests. Ensure that you have listed all your interests, hobbies and achievements on your application. The skills you have acquired outside of your academic achievement and work experience will likely be equally as valuable to us
  • Your application form can be completed in stages. Ensure you have taken the time to fully and carefully review your answers prior to submitting your application form. Attention to detail and accuracy is vital and makes a strong first impression
  • Make sure you take a note of your unique username and password log-in details, in order to return to your application form and check the progress of your application after submission
  • We actively encourage and welcome applicants from all degree disciplines; however, all applicants will need to demonstrate a genuine and proven motivation for a career in financial services, HSBC and the programme/business they have applied to
  • Once you are entirely happy with your application, submit your form. Please note that, once submitted, your application cannot be modified
  • Use spell check and review your grammar prior to submitting your application. First impressions count and even minor errors may impact the progression of your application
  • Print out your completed application form as a reference

Your CV/resume:

Your CV/resume is our first impression of you as an individual, providing us with an overview of your key skills, experience, interests and selling points. It is vital that you therefore ensure all information is correct, true and representative, and that the presentation makes a clear and lasting impression.

Covering letter:

  • Ensure your cover letter (if applicable) is addressed to the right organisation. This may sound obvious to you but as your potential employer we do not wish to receive an application that is directed to another organisation. Attention to detail is key
  • Ensure your cover letter is tailored to HSBC and demonstrates your motivation for wishing to join our organisation, not a generic letter circulated to our competitors
  • The cover letter should not repeat any points that can be easily noted from your CV/resume
  • Upload your CV/resume and cover letter as one attachment
  • Your CV/resume should not be more than two pages in length

The interview:

  • Do your research properly – it shows and pays dividends. Be sure to research widely and come informed, looking beyond what we have written on our website and in our brochure
  • Be yourself and be honest. Integrity is very important to us
  • We are looking for strong, well-rounded individuals with wide ranging experiences that go beyond the classroom
  • You should be able to clearly express with evidence why you want to join us at HSBC and why you have chosen the programme you are applying to
  • Can you tell us what sets us apart from the competition? Have you got a solid argument for why you would be suitable? Practice beforehand and come prepared
  • Practice interview techniques such as the STAR technique:

Situation – what was the situation?
Task – what was your task?
Action – what did you do?
Result – what was the outcome? Also, what did you learn from this situation?

  • Prepare for the different stages of the assessment by using various sources – for example, in preparation for the numerical skills tests, practice at www.shldirect.com
