"The responsibility I have been given by my managers gives me a great sense of ownership coupled with the knowledge that I can really make a difference and be recognised for my efforts."
I joined HSBC because the Client Management programme greatly appealed to me. It is designed to increase knowledge of both Global Markets and Global Banking products, as well as your analytical skills, bringing them together to provide solutions for clients. HSBC’s global recognition and footprint were also factors in my decision, as they meant there would be diverse career prospects and colleagues.
The best part of my job is the level of responsibility I have been given by my managers. It gives me a great sense of ownership coupled with the knowledge that I can really make a difference and be recognised for my efforts. The social aspect of working at HSBC is also very enjoyable, with the Global Banking Social Committee organising regular sporting and social events, which have made me really feel a part of the HSBC community.
My standout moment so far was being given extended effective associate ownership of my own client relationship. The client happened to be one of the largest banks in the UK and worldwide. To be handed such an opportunity within six months of being an analyst on the graduate programme was a great moment for me so early on in my career.
What has surprised me the most is the extent to which fellow colleagues are willing to offer help and impart their knowledge to you, even when they are extremely busy with their own work load.
Looking to the future, I would like to develop my financial modelling skills, while gradually enhancing my relationship management skills, by working within either a corporate client management team or an advisory team. I would also like to complete a term within a Global Markets product area within the next five years, so that I would have a firm all-round foundation and experience of the capabilities within Global Banking and Markets. I can then draw upon this within a relationship manager role with my own portfolio of clients.
My advice to you is to continue being proactive throughout your career; take your career in your own hands and do what is required to guide it in the direction you want. Thinking ‘How can I add value to the Bank and to my career?’ every day will help motivate you and by acting upon that thought, networks, opportunities, responsibility and recognition will definitely come your way.
