"Everyone is willing to make time to answer your questions, even if they may seem basic. This approach has made the transition from student to employee smoother than expected."

I joined HSBC as an intern during my second year at university. It was HSBC’s global stance and strong presence in emerging markets that initially drew me. I found the office an interesting place and it remains so today. I was surrounded by experienced, knowledgeable people who were happy to share their experience and knowledge with me. On the back of the internship, I was offered a place on the graduate programme. I decided HSBC was the right place for me and that the business would be committed to my development.

The best parts of my job are the projects. They can have significant implications for the business and even as a graduate you can get involved and make an impact. I’ve also enjoyed the exposure I’ve had to the different areas of the Global Asset Management business through the graduate programme. The chance to explore a variety of areas is invaluable when it comes to learning how the company works.

My standout moment so far has been working with top level management in small group meetings, seeing how they interact, and their thoughts on how to drive the business forward. Although there is some pressure attached, leading a successful meeting leaves me feeling fulfilled and satisfied with the work I have prepared.

What has surprised me the most is the open attitude of my colleagues in the office. Everyone is willing to make time to answer your questions, even if they may seem basic. This approach has made the transition from student to employee smoother than expected.

In the future, I hope to progress through the business. However, I am keeping an open mind as to what path to follow, as most areas that I have worked in have interested me. Hopefully, I will be able to take advantage of HSBC’s global footprint and get some international experience.

My advice to you is to seize opportunities. There are countless chances to make contacts and create opportunities. Capitalising on these is the key to making the most of yourself and enjoying a successful career.

I capitalised on an opportunity to make a difference to a project by using its initial objectives as a springboard to reach further aims. The evolution of the assignment allowed me to demonstrate my strengths and show I had the capability to move it forward. The project is ongoing and has already had significant impact.
