Global Research

The Global Research team is HSBC’s ideas engine and the thought-leader for its corporate and institutional clients. With over 500 staff in 21 countries, we specialise in four core product areas - currency, economics, equities and fixed income. We work on a wide variety of themed research for the bank, contributing to its reputation for highly resourced, globally connected solutions.

Two main areas

With a particular strength in emerging markets and climate change, we focus our research on two main activity areas:

  • Macro research analyses economic developments and key trends in the various financial markets in which we operate. This research ranges from long-term studies on economic growth to interest rate and foreign currency forecasts
  • Sector and company research focuses on analysing the major industry sectors from a truly global perspective, identifying the most important themes and predicting how they might affect clients in the medium term

Join this team and you will be a trusted member of a network made up of specialised research analysts and economists pulled together by our major centres to devise commercially potent ideas and strategies for markets and industries worldwide.

Setting the agenda

This team has robust debates with colleagues and clients across the globe, but always with the view to formulating new strategies and solutions or testing established ones to breaking point.

We are here to set and change agendas. Our debates might include the economic landscape in the year 2050 with a view to advising clients on long-term strategy. Our key challenges might include scoping out a scenario where a crop fails in the world's biggest exporter, asking ourselves what the implications are, how corporations and governments might respond, and what that would mean for particular clients or industries.

Based in London, Hong Kong or the Americas, you will take on two-9 month rotations. You will deal with two separate asset classes and may also have the possibility of an international rotation.

Highly varied work

Your work will be extremely varied. Early on, you will be gathering data and helping to create financial models, writing reports and answering queries from clients and internal sales and trading teams. As your experience grows, you will research and write on key themes and developments within a particular industry, as well as developing and maintaining models on companies within that sector.

A matter of debate

This is an environment where everybody has a voice. We are looking for people who are numerate, articulate and who relish ideas and debate. You will need to be creative enough to develop your own insightful ideas, robust enough to defend them, and mature enough to accept when somebody else has something better. Crucially, we are looking for people who can ground their ideas in commercial reality.

"Because everybody's opinion is respected here, it results in collective debates. These debates create very sophisticated ideas. I'm very proud of that." Peter Holmes, COO Global Research

The HSBC Summer Analyst Programme lasts for 10 weeks and is designed for ambitious penultimate year university students. This is a non-rotational programme taking place predominantly in our main hubs: London, New York, Hong Kong and Dubai. Our extensive range of opportunities covers all areas of Global Banking, Global Markets, Global Research, all areas of Global Infrastructure, HTS GBM Technology, Global Asset Management and Global Private Banking.

Whichever discipline you choose, the programme will act as a comprehensive introduction to that area of the Bank. Your programme will provide you with the platform to be considered for our Full-Time Analyst Programme. You will have the opportunity to show your genuine potential and develop the behaviours, skills and experience essential to enjoy a long-term career with us at HSBC.

The programme will comprise hands-on experience, excellent technical, behavioural and IT skills training and the opportunity to form very important networks with peers and business leaders alike. Just as importantly, each programme will act as an introduction to the culture and values of HSBC.

Taking all of these elements collectively, the HSBC Summer Analyst programme acts as an extended 'assessment centre' for people looking to join HSBC as a Full-Time Analyst once they finish university.
