Global Markets Operations

As financial markets become more globally connected and regulatory requirements get tougher, HSBC's Global Markets Operations team is at the heart of an industry in flux. With a drive towards infrastructure transformation, a heightened focus on risk and control and the need to deliver seamless client service, the role of Operations is dynamic and ever-evolving. As such, we offer significant opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Diverse business, results orientation

The international scale of our business is striking. We manage all post-trade activity for Global Markets across 60 countries. This entails extensive volumes and a diverse range of financial products – from basic foreign exchange products to complex OTC Derivatives.

In order to stay ahead, we are investing in our infrastructure to build capacity and support business growth. Our major renovation programmes harness the latest technology and specialist expertise – moving us closer towards a globally consistent, competitive and robust operating model.

In everything we do, we apply a results-driven, global focus.

Global reach

Our structure reflects that of our sales and trading business partners. We have large, global teams working across securities, currencies and commodities, and derivatives. We also have dedicated risk and control, client service and cross product utility teams. Comprising nearly 3,000 people, these teams span our regional hub sites – London, Paris, Hong Kong, New York, Kuala Lumpur and Manila – as well as 50 further satellite sites across both emerging and mature markets.

"We drive every part of the trade life cycle post execution and our business moves with international trade flows. There has never been a more challenging and exciting time to work in Operations." Naz Badat, Global Head of Global Markets Operations

This is an 18-month programme for those who thrive on complexity and constant change. The programme requires a commercial mindset, logical thinking and a strong ability to turn theory into practice that delivers tangible results.

The programme

The programme comprises three structured rotations embedded in a functional area, alongside classroom training. You will understand how the function operates and what its business impact is, so you are able to support it and help drive improvement.

Unrivalled experience

Through the rotations you will gain in-depth experience of working on business transformation programmes, applying Six Sigma methodology, managing trade processing, handling client requirements and responding to regulatory demands. The globally integrated nature of Operations means you will work in close collaboration with colleagues in different regions. You will also gain a deep understanding of international trade connectivity in both mature and emerging markets.

"The level of responsibility you are given at HSBC is really eye-opening. We launched a project two months ago which was designed to engage people in Cross Product Services to raise, analyse, manage and action on their daily risks and issues. I was involved in the project from the beginning to the end, and I still maintain and support the running of the initiative." Xiaochen Cui, Risk and Control Analyst, Cross Product Services

The HSBC Summer Analyst Programme lasts for 10 weeks and is designed for ambitious penultimate year university students. This is a non-rotational programme taking place predominantly in our main hubs: London, New York, Hong Kong and Dubai. Our extensive range of opportunities covers all areas of Global Banking, Global Markets, Global Research, all areas of Global Infrastructure, HTS GBM Technology, Global Asset Management and Global Private Banking.

Whichever discipline you choose, the programme will act as a comprehensive introduction to that area of the Bank. Your programme will provide you with the platform to be considered for our full-time Global Businesses Analyst Programme (GBAP). You will have the opportunity to show your genuine potential and develop the behaviours, skills and experience essential to enjoy a long-term career with us at HSBC.

The programme will comprise hands-on experience, excellent technical, behavioural and IT skills training and the opportunity to form very important networks with peers and business leaders alike. Just as importantly, each programme will act as an introduction to the culture and values of HSBC.

Taking all of these elements collectively, the HSBC Summer Analyst programme acts as an extended 'assessment centre' for people looking to join HSBC as a Full-Time Analyst once they finish university.
