Global Banking Advisory
HSBC's strategy is to become the leading international bank, a clear and challenging goal, with the Advisory team holding a prominent role. Due to HSBC's focused strategy within emerging markets, we have a highly competitive positioning in the world's key growth areas, and have developed strong relationships with clients in these regions, who are now in need of investment banking solutions. Joining the Advisory programme will allow you to be part of a truly global operation with long-term international opportunities.
Analysts and Associates in Advisory will have the opportunity to work on the origination and execution of investment banking transactions, including mergers and acquisitions (M&A), leveraged and management buyouts, equity and debt new issues, other capital raisings and recapitalisations on behalf of HSBC's clients around the world.
Due to HSBC's wide variety of services and client relationships across regions, Analysts and Associates will be exposed to diverse perspectives and experiences within the context of the industry. HSBC has maintained a strong stance throughout the recent global financial crisis, and as our clients look to expand their businesses, we will play an integral role in helping them do so.
Shaping strategy
Our bankers shape and promote company strategy across industries around the globe. The Advisory team provides M&A and capital markets solutions to multinational clients. Sector teams include Financial Institutions (FIG), Resources and Energy (REG), Chemicals, Industrials, Transport & Infrastructure, Real Estate, Telecoms & Media, Consumer & Retail (CRG), Healthcare, and Financial Sponsors.
Capitalising on our global network
Our in-depth knowledge of the major growth markets across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the Americas, and especially in Asia-Pacific have and will continue to ensure our involvement in high-profile strategic business. This is particularly true for cross-border transactions, where we can capitalise on our global network. Our proposition for developed markets-to-emerging markets deals is strong, and our emerging markets-to-emerging markets track record will open opportunities for our best people going forward.
Injecting growth
The future of our marketplace looks very bright. There are a large number of businesses out there who have built up their cash reserves and are ready to take advantage of increasing economic confidence to deliver growth in their own businesses. When that happens, our advisory expertise, our financing strength and our international network will put us in a very good position. It could do the same for you.
"The most surprising thing about life in Global Banking is the learning curve. The speed you learn at, the knowledge you gain of your sector, and the confidence you develop are all phenomenal." Jim Lelivelt, Analyst, Financial Sponsors Group, Global Banking
Analysts joining the Global Banking Advisory programme will be part of the ‘Strategic Transactions Group’ and will work as part of a sector-focused team, region-focused team or as part of the M&A team. The role offers an absorbing mixture of emerging markets and developed markets work. You will get involved in a wide variety of cross-border transactions, especially as the markets in Asia and Latin America continue their impressive growth. In addition, as regulations and rules change, the marketplace will become an ever more complex place to operate in. All of this will combine to offer you the kind of challenge that will stretch you and excite you in equal measure.
Rapid development
Your skills and knowledge will develop rapidly. You’ll benefit from being part of a highly collegial environment, where Analysts are an integral part of deal teams and where you will work as closely with the Managing Directors as you will with the Associates.
We’re looking for highly numerate individuals with the potential to become financially literate. On a personal level, you will need to be a fast learner, good listener and excellent communicator, with an analytical mind and the motivation to work long hours when required. Most crucial of all will be your interpersonal skills – particularly your ability to get on with colleagues and clients alike when the pressure is on – and your drive to deliver the best possible solutions to our clients, time and again.
Developing your network
Your training will be in-depth and high-quality, and will start with a global induction, where everyone from your global Analyst class will convene in London, allowing you to develop a network that could last your entire career. Your training will continue throughout the programme with HSBC’s Continuous Learning Curriculum, which offers Advisory-specific and cross-business education and networking opportunities.
“I am constantly exposed to strategic business rationales, industries and geographies within the M&A space. It is exciting to be involved in non-US centric transactions and gain experience working with clients within Asia, Latin America and Africa. My Analyst experience has given me insight into various industries as well as client motivations in the M&A world.” Jessica M Goodman, Analyst, New York

The core elements
Your internship will comprise three core elements: a one-week induction including IT, technical and behavioural skills training; involvement in a live project or a number of transactions; regular networking and social events.
An insight into HSBC
Through both formal training and day-to-day experience, you will gain an insight into our competitive advantages in the markets and the financial services industry. In turn, throughout the programme, you will continue to deepen your understanding of our business, strategy and customers so you can enhance your contribution and impact.
Building your network
The Summer Associate Programme will provide you with the opportunity to establish a network of peers and leaders across Global Banking and Markets. You will be expected to build and leverage this network to maximise your effectiveness.
Developing your knowledge

Regular business feedback on your performance from your line manager and colleagues will help you maximise your development throughout the summer.
Ongoing support
At every stage, you will be able to call on your Associate Development Advisor and Line Manager for coaching and advice regarding your personal development. You will also be allocated a buddy to share ideas, give you guidance and provide all-round support.
Pass your assessments
The ultimate aim of the Summer Associate Programme is to support you in developing the skills that will help you become a full-time 2012 Global Banking and Markets Associate. To that end, it is a good idea to see your internship as an extended assessment centre.
Upon joining your team, you will be assessed on your technical knowledge, analytical skills, communication skills, teamwork and attitude. Your line manager will set specific and measurable objectives at the beginning, manage your performance throughout your 10 weeks with us, and conduct your mid-programme and end-of-programme reviews, offering support and guidance throughout.

Not only does it offer a comprehensive introduction to our culture, strategy and values, it also equips you with some of the essential technical skills you need to launch a successful career as a full-time Associate.
