New York city guide
Midtown Manhattan is a great place from which to explore New York. Famed as ‘the city that never sleeps’ there is no doubt that visitors can find whatever they want, whenever they want: shops, restaurants, bars, music, sport – the list is endless.
New York is the most densely populated city in the United States, covering 305 square miles. It is home to over 8.3 million people and an estimated 170 languages. Manhattan Island – one of five New York boroughs – contains some of the City’s most famous landmarks: Central Park, the Broadway Theatre district and many iconic skyscrapers. The borough is the financial centre of the city and you will find the headquarters not just of HSBC, but of many other corporations as well as the United Nations.
Finding somewhere to stay should not be too difficult. There is the Marriott Courtyard hotel on Fifth Avenue, Dylan Hotel, and 70 Park Avenue Hotel. Type Manhattan hotels into the internet and you'll find many more.
Once you’re settled, you can go out and explore. There is a restaurant to suit every taste, so whether you fancy fine dining or a traditional New York bagel, you’re bound to find an establishment you like. Once you've eaten, you can take in a Broadway musical, see a show at Radio City Music Hall or catch a sporting event at Madison Square Gardens. Clubs and bars are myriad – you can check out what’s on at Fromers or at Nymag.
If it's your first visit to New York, you may wish to see some of the city’s most well-known sights: the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and of course, the Statue of Liberty. Nature lovers may want to visit New York’s Botanical Gardens or the Bronx Zoo, while shoppers will enjoy the attractions of luxury retail on both Fifth and Madison Avenues.
The weather in New York alternates between hot, humid summers, and cold winters, with spring and autumn offering erratic, but generally mild, conditions. If you need to escape the rain, you can always get around using the New York subway – the largest underground rail network in the world, which runs 24 hours a day. The city’s famous yellow cabs are also an option, although traffic jams on New York’s gridded street system are commonplace.
